Navigatr Badge Framework

The Navigatr Badge Framework uses shapes, colours, and shading to encode learning type and depth. Here's how it works and where to use it.

Written by Support Desk

The Navigatr Badge Framework offers a set of design templates to support organisations in creating clear, recognisable digital badges. These templates save time and provide clarity by aligning badge types and modes with specific learning achievements.

Note: If your wallet includes badges you imported from other platforms (Credly, Accredible, Moodle, and others), those badges keep the design of the platform that issued them and appear with an Imported chip. The Navigatr Badge Framework described here applies to badges issued by Navigatr providers. See Open Badges Explained for how imports work.

Key features of the framework

  • Badge Types: Different shapes represent various types of learning, such as informal, training, certification, qualification, and membership.

  • Proficiency Levels: Five levels (1 to 5) show the depth and complexity of the skill, rendered as layered geometric forms.

  • Badge Modes: Colour shading indicates the depth of engagement or expertise, from exploring a subject to leading others.

  • Fixed Elements: Each badge includes essential details like the issuer’s logo, badge title, and type/mode indicators.

Proficiency levels

Each badge sits at one of five proficiency levels. Higher levels represent deeper skill and are shown through layered geometric forms with increasing visual complexity.

  • Level 1: A single shape. The starting point for a skill.

  • Levels 2 to 4: Overlapping, rotated shapes that build in complexity as the skill develops.

  • Level 5: Gradient fills with full visual complexity. The most advanced expression of the skill.

Why use the framework?

The framework simplifies badge design, promotes consistency, and enhances the recognition of skills across organisations. It is ideal for organisations beginning or refining their digital badging strategy.

Important note: Proper attribution is required when using the framework outside of Navigatr.
